The main objectives of FOLIAGE consist in coordinating efforts for the large-scale implementation of EGS and closing the gap between research and policy for EGS by promoting their principles and disseminating results to all relevant stakeholders. The involved stakeholders will be: (i) decision makers: governmental employees, mayors and town hall employees, managers of large corporation where EGS systems are operating (hotels); (ii) engineers: environmental engineers, mechanical engineers; (iii) citizens which can install an EGS at their house for heat production; (iv) EU institutions: DG Energy and DG Climate.

Foliage will establish a comprehensive knowledge network to address the challenges related to the large-scale implementation of EGS using different points of view, accounting for climatic, geographical, political and socio-economical differences. The Action network includes 22 countries (with 11 ITC) extending from Norway to Cyprus, covering the East, South, West and North of Europe. This geographic coverage is crucial to address the above differences, draw together appropriate expertise relating to EGS and thus, develop the knowhow to promote their transition from single projects to having city scale impacts.

FOLIAGE brings together expertise from different participants, from across a variety of sectors. The consortium includes academics involved in the first experiments stating the ability of energy piles to meet simultaneously their mechanical and thermal role as well as local authorities and HVAC installers but it also includes partners who managed a transition from academic ideas to real-life implementation in an ITC. This diversity of expertise will promote a continuous and multidirectional exchange of knowledge within the Action.
